Oral Mother Tongue translation: a revolutionary approach to Bible translation

THE OMT METHOD

EVERY LANGUAGE mobilizes mother tongue speakers to translate the full Bible into every language and ignite discipleship movements through a method called "Oral Mother Tongue" translation (OMT).

OMT uses simple technology combined with the 738 trade language Bibles already translated to streamline the translation process without compromising the veracity of the Scriptures.

 

The method involves 2 stages

 

Stage 1: Translation

Translations happen in 3 phases:
  • months 1-3
  • months 4-6
  • months 7-18

Example of a Weekly Timeline

A typical weekly schedule for Bible translation involves worship, prayer, Bible study and teaching, along with getting feedback of recordings from their Community Scripture Counsel composed of church elders in their mother tongue church community.

Stage 2: Distribution & Church Movements

We translate full Bibles in 18 months—but that's only the beginning. After the Bible is translated, these translators are equipped and commissioned as church planters to reach their people. This scalable model will continue until all languages have both a full Bible and a thriving church movement.

WHY ORALLY TRANSLATE?

It's estimated that there are over 50,000 mother tongue languages in the world, and of these only 1.5% have a full Bible.
50% of the world cannot read at a functional level and 70% primarily learn through oral communication.

FULL BIBLE IN 18 MONTHS?

Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German in 11 weeks.
While Martin Luther was hiding at Wartburg Castle in 1521–1522, he translated the New Testament into German—the common language of the day.
This act shook the global Church, not only because of the speed in which he did it, but because the Catholic Church at the time insisted that the Latin Vulgate was the authoritative version and discouraged vernacular translations. Martin Luther was labeled heretical for corrupting the Word of God.
Luther challenged the gatekeeping of the Catholic Church; he boldly challenged the Church's monopoly over biblical interpretation and authority, arguing that translation did not require special permission from the clergy or ecclesiastical hierarchy.
"I ask you, what else is the word of God but all the contents of the Bible? And who gave you the right to forbid me to speak it in German, as well as in Latin or Greek? Should not I, as a German, speak in German if I understand it? Why should not I translate the Bible into German?"

Luther definitively declared that native speakers who understood both the source and the target languages were fully qualified to translate Scripture.
